If I don’t have a tripod

It happens more often than I like to admit: I’m away with family on holiday and need to capture a moment with a good portrait (which, of course, includes me) – and realise I’ve forgotten to bring my tripod. I look for somewhere to place my camera: by the window? on a rock? on a potted plant? You’ve been there; you know all the possibilities.

One thing that might help is to have a small bean bag handy. If you don’t have that, gather some sand and make one. It’s an excellent fix for all the irregular rock surfaces that may otherwise suggest themselves in the spur of the moment.

When all else fails, ask that other tourist to take the shot for you!.
